What is Myotherapy?
Myotherapy is a relatively new physical therapy, which was brought about initially as a university course at RMIT around 30 years ago. Those who study Myotherapy don't just learn how to perform manual therapy techniques, but learn the sciences behind what they do, so that they know how to better apply it. Myo is latin for muscle, so think of it as "muscle therapy".
The practitioners focus is on treating the soft and connective tissues of the body by drawing on a range of techniques including massage, trigger/pressure point techniques, dry needling, cupping and various stretching techniques. At our clinic Kim also practices the use of electrical stimulation through needling with the use of a TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) machine which are attached to the needles. This can make the needling more effective. Kim also is adept with the use of Shockwave, which we use to help with recovery of chronic tendinopathies.
Muscular pain is typically the result of an injury or strain, general fatigue, lack of conditioning or ill health. These issues are also focused on in your myotherapy treatment to help you avoid muscle related pain and injury re-occurrence.
Myotherapy is able to treat a diverse number of complaints including:
