The Tibilais posterior plays an important role in the stabilization of the arch on the inside of the foot and also for foot movement during exercise such as running and walking. It also helps with the transitional movement of rolling inwards during running and walking(1).
This tendon and muscle is commonly injured in people with over pronated feet and flat feet(2). Injury is also common in people who have repetitive loading which results in micro trauma and eventually injury.

What an Osteopath can do for you?
As an Osteopath we can provide a thorough assessment on your foot and ankle to determine what has been damaged and what changes to your biomechanics are required to help this tendon and muscle heal. This could include changes to the ankle, knee and hip. For these reasons issues with your feet and ankle movements can cause issues further up the chain and even into the upper spine.
For the best results an Osteopath is going to use a combination of manual therapy techniques, exercise rehabilitation and education to help that tendon recovery and get you back out on the running track. Aswell as manual therapy we also have Shockwave Therapy at the clinic, which is very effective at reducing pain and speeding up the healing process in chronic tendon issues (see our Shockwave blog for further information). Also if we feel that you need a consultation with a podiatrist or for an assessment for orthotics we will direct you to a trusted podiatrist for further assistance.
If you have recently returned to walking or running and are having some issues give us a call at Kardinia Osteopath clinic on 5221 1877. We look forward to hearing from you and getting you moving in the right direction.
